Nature Study Challenge
A great way to see Oklahoma's natural world is to visit a state park . If you're unable to travel, this Nature Study Challenge takes you on virtual trips to special places across Oklahoma. Your guides for these virtual trips are Oklahoma State Parks and the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy. The primary source of information for native wildlife is the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. This Nature Study Challenge has two parts; the "Oklahoma Pathfinder" and the "State Park Scientist." You can complete one or both! You'll earn rewards for each part that you complete .

Rain Forest Day

Did you know that 80% of the world's food originated in the rainforest?  There are many easily accessible, rainforest related products to be used in a celebration.

Some food items that could be used include:  coffee, corn, rice, ginger, chocolate, bananas, beans, mangoes, chewing gum, lemons, sweet potatoes, sugar, nutmeg, vanilla, tapioca, avocados, coconut, cinnamon, tea, pineapples, oranges, cashew nuts, macadamia nuts, and many, many more.

This post provides many ideas to host your own Rain Forest day, including ways to decorate, refreshment ideas, and fun games to play.  A major success was the blow dart game using straws and q-tips dipped in paint!

Something Smells Fishy
If available, students love a trip to the fish hatchery.  This is connected to the Great Outdoor Adventure Theme.  If a fish hatchery is not within traveling distance, consider contacting state game rangers to see if there might be a travelling exhibit that could visit your school!  Fishing is a great camping connection!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
A visit to the local recycling center is an effective culminating field trip to celebrate the outdoors.  The Choctaw Nation has recycling centers in Durant and Poteau.

If it isn't possible to go to a recycling center, consider hosting your own recycling day at your summer school site.  One of the favorite activities at the recycling center is putting together "trash puzzles".  Simply, take a flat piece of trash (cereal boxes and soda labels work great!) and make it into a puzzle for students to piece back together.

Have different examples of trash and talk to students about how long it takes for each to decompose.  Students will be fascinated with these numbers.  Extend the activity and have students make a trash decomposition timeline.

The file below offers you information about the decomposition of trash provided by the National Park Service.

Fly High with a Trip to your Local Airport
Give your students an opportunity to fly high by visiting your local airport.  Just the chance to sit inside an airplane's cockpit or see a plane soar high in the sky will have a lasting impact on students.
