Field Trips and Resource Contacts

Something Smells Fishy
If available, students love a trip to the fish hatchery. This is connected to the Great Outdoor Adventure Theme. If a fish hatchery is not within traveling distance, consider contacting state game rangers to see if there might be a travelling exhibit that could visit your school! Fishing is a great camping connection!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
A visit to the local recycling center is an effective culminating field trip to celebrate the outdoors. The Choctaw Nation has recycling centers in Durant and Poteau.
If it isn't possible to go to a recycling center, consider hosting your own recycling day at your summer school site. One of the favorite activities at the recycling center is putting together "trash puzzles". Simply, take a flat piece of trash (cereal boxes and soda labels work great!) and make it into a puzzle for students to piece back together.
Have different examples of trash and talk to students about how long it takes for each to decompose. Students will be fascinated with these numbers. Extend the activity and have students make a trash decomposition timeline.
The file below offers you information about the decomposition of trash provided by the National Park Service.

Fly High with a Trip to your Local Airport
Give your students an opportunity to fly high by visiting your local airport. Just the chance to sit inside an airplane's cockpit or see a plane soar high in the sky will have a lasting impact on students.
